Plant-aids from Nature’s pharmacy

Growing up, one of my fondest memories was watching The Jungle Book on DD National. I remember a particular scene vividly: Mowgli, injured in the jungle, is helped by a ‘human’ who quickly plucks some leaves, chews or crushes them, and applies them to Mowgli’s wounds. That simple act resonated with me, sparking an early curiosity and connection to the healing power of plants. I remember wondering, even as a child, What kind of leaves did they use to help Mowgli?

As the years went by, I became more aware of the ways nature surrounds us with remedies. My mother, for instance, would often turn to our own garden for natural first aid. She’d use various herbs—our very own “band-aids” or “natural Neosporin”—to treat small bruises and scrapes. She’d use different varieties for problems like insect bites, skin irritations etc. Our garden had an impressive array of healing plants, naming a few – Tincture plant, Tulsi, Neem, Turmeric, Lipstick tree, Congress pacha, Thumba..Each of these plants offered a unique benefit, like nature’s pharmacy right at our fingertips.

That was the beginning of my deeper exploration into plants—not just learning their names, but truly understanding their uses and the stories they carry. Over time, I developed a meaningful connection with them. Now, I talk to my plants, and each interaction strengthens my bond with nature. This journey has taught me that plants are not only our allies in health but also companions in life.

Sharing a list of plants which I have been noting down (as well as using a few them) in this category.
