Pottu-vellari – A natural Summer thirst-buster

This fruit is called as Pottu vellari in Malayalam. Blonde cucumber/Snap melon in English.

One of the summer fruit(Read about other Summer fruits of Kerala here) which is easily available in few places in Kerala. Pottu Vellari got its name because of the cracks that appear on its skin when it gets ripe.

I used to wonder why this is mostly seen near my hometown and not in other places(it is available but not at this huge quantities). An article in Mathrubhumi gave me the answer. It was first cultivated in my hometown and then later spread to Alappuzha(Alleppey). The farmers need to give more care in growing, harvesting(without breaking) and transporting the fruits. Once the skin gets crack, it has to be consumed within couple of hours. This fruit can be harvested

To consume, cut the fruit into pieces and add it to a tumbler or glass along with little sugar or jaggery. Smash it with a spoon to make juice. There is no need of water to be added as the fruit itself contains more than 90% of water. And.. Slurrrppp!

The fruit has medicinal value to cure skin diseases from heat. The fruit is also a good source of vitamin B 6, Vitamin C, Iron, Potassium and Calcium. This is best thirst quencher during summer. It acts as an instant energy booster at the same time cooling down the body naturally.

Another recipe which I got to know from the seller was by adding little coconut milk to the above mentioned recipe.
I could not take the beautiful sight of stacked melons at the seller place. I will try to click one next Summer.

Ditch those cool-drinks which are artificially flavored ,colored and loaded with preservatives this Summer and opt for natural coolers which are good for your health
