Hibiscus Flower Stir Fry Recipe

In my previous posts, I have mentioned about my Amma making some unique dishes. So thought of sharing one of them today. She calls it Chembarathi upperi, and I named as hibiscus stir fry. The entire cooking process was recorded and my kid wanted it to be in youtube and the link here 😏. The side effects of watching few YT cooking channels🙈.

So let’s go back to the recipe.
Ingredients –
Hibiscus flowers – 10-15, free of insects, washed, stamen and sepal removed (please Google for flower parts), chopped.
Onion – 1/2 C, chopped
Coconut – 1/4 C, grated
Spices – Turmeric and chilly powders -1/4 TSP
Sugar – a pinch
Salt – as required
For seasoning – Mustard seeds, Urad dal, oil

Steps –
Heat oil in kadai. Splutter the mustard seeds. Add the urad dal, stir till it turns little brown. Add onions and saute. Add turmeric and chilly powders. Add the chopped flowers. Stir well in low heat(it cooks fast). Add salt, sugar. Finally add the grated coconut!.
Ready!

Hibiscus flowers – can be the normal 5 petals one or the layered ones. But please do not use the hybrid varieties.

Prepare and let me know how it turned out. And don’t forget to tag me while sharing😁
